The Foote Theatre School (FTS) provides year-round classes for all ages and experience levels in Acting, Musical Theatre, Playwriting, Improvisation, and so much more! Over 1,000 students annually are taught by our faculty of 25 local theatre professionals. Established in 1966, FTS is the largest theatre education program in Edmonton and one of the largest in Canada.

Job Description

The Citadel Theatre, one of Canada’s largest and busiest professional, not-for-profit theatre companies, has an opening for an Interim Director of Education and Outreach. This is a full-time, 16-month contract position working 40 hours per week and includes benefits. The dates of this contract are May 11, 2026 to August 27, 2027.

The Director of Education and Outreach is responsible for overseeing the Foote Theatre School, Young Companies, and other education initiatives, as well as outreach to students, artists and the public. As a member of the Leadership Team, the successful candidate will actively participate in developing and growing a culture that supports a positive and productive work environment and an engaged team, while meeting our commitments to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Programming:

  • In consultation with the Artistic and Executive Directors, develop plans for the Foote Theatre School (FTS) and Young Companies (YC).
  • Program and oversee the artistic/educational components of the FTS and YC.
  • Ongoing evaluation of curriculum, programming, and instruction.

Financial Management:

  • Prepare annual FTS and YC budget and monitor spending.
  • Prepare reports as required (Board, funders, sponsors, year-end, etc.).
  • Review of scholarship and bursary applications and the awarding of financial assistance to selected applicants.

 Communication & Marketing:

  • Respond to questions and concerns from instructors, parents, and students regarding curriculum, programming, and course material.
  • Manage and review all instructor correspondence regarding programming, course structure, and students.
  • Work with the Marketing Department to promote FTS, YC, and Students’ Club in collaboration with marketing and sales teams to build relationships with schools and educators to promote the FTS, YC, Students’ Club, and School Matinees.

Students’ Club:

  • Organize and Develop Students’ Club pre-show activity topics/themes and Talk Backs.

 Outreach:

  • Explore and/or support opportunities for outreach to students, artists, patrons, and the public.
  • Assist programing and organizing external community events.

Strategic Leadership:

  • Develop policies and strategies for the maintenance and enhancement of FTS and YC within the parameters of the Citadel Theatre’s Strategic Plan.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and coach a diverse group of FTS and YC staff, assistants, designers and instructors that meets or exceeds our commitments to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (EDIA).
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education:
    • Post-secondary education in arts and/or education training.
  • Skills:
    • Ability to thrive in a continually changing, fast-paced environment and work with a diverse group of people, programs, events, and situations.
    • Demonstrated ability to create and manage budgets.
    • Passionate about inclusive and diverse workplaces.
    • Self-motivated with the ability to multi-task, problem solve and prioritize responsibility in a timely and efficient manner.
    • An enthusiastic attitude of “yes”; dedicated to being a problem solver.
  • Extensive experience working with young people in educational settings.
  • Experience as an arts professional and an understanding of the Canadian theatre landscape.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Educational pedagogical training and experience would be an asset.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some weekends, evenings, and holidays, to support Theatre School operations.
  • Ability to pass a vulnerable sector check is required for this position.
  • This is a temporary full-time, year-round interim position requiring consistent availability and engagement. The successful candidate will be committed to Citadel Theatre as their primary professional focus. This role is not designed to accommodate ongoing external contract, independent theatre practice, or gig-based work that may conflict with the responsibilities or schedule of the position.
