About the Gros Morne Theatre Festival

The Gros Morne Theatre Festival is a repertory theatre festival located in Cow Head, Newfoundland & Labrador, featuring 6 productions running from June to September. The festival operates out of the Nurse Myra Bennett Centre, a new state of the art performing arts facility that opened in 2021. Our facility features two performance spaces, a 178-seat mainstage, and a 70-seat studio space. Additionally, our facility features dedicated production workspaces for scenic carpentry, props, and wardrobe.  

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to live, work, and play in Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site and one of Canada’s most beautiful landscapes.  

We provide shared staff accommodations in Cow Head and cover a round trip of travel via the most economical means from the employee’s point of origin to Cow Head NL. 

Job Description

Job Details

Reporting to the Artistic Producer, the Technical Director will manage a 6-person production team and will be responsible for executing all technical elements within the Gros Morne Theatre Festival.  

A list of duties and responsibilities include: 

  • Oversee all technical aspects of the Gros Morne Theatre Festival’s productions 

  • Work with the artistic producer and scenic carpenter to evaluate and approve production designs 

  • Collaborate with directors, designers, stage managers, and creative teams to realize artistic visions within budget and schedule 

  • Develop and maintain crew schedules for builds, tech weeks, and runs of all GMTF productions 

  • Lead, supervise, and mentor technical staff and production assistants 

  • Manage technical budgets, including materials, rentals, and equipment purchases 

  • Oversee procurement of supplies and equipment; maintain accurate records of expenditures 

  • Supervise the setup, care/maintenance, and strike/storage, of GMTF workspaces 

  • Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety standards, fire regulations, and industry best practices 

  • Lead daily technical meetings 

  • Attend weekly production meetings 

Work Experience and Qualifications  

We are searching for candidates with the following skills, abilities, and qualifications:  

  • Experience leading and scheduling crews working on multiple productions 

  • A background in multiple technical disciplines (sound, lighting, video) 

  • Proven leadership skills, punctuality, good work ethic, strong interpersonal skills, and passion for live theatre 

  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs 

  • Experience with an ETC Element 2 or other ETC EOS consoles is considered an asset 

  • Experience with digital mixing consoles and wireless lavalier microphones is considered an asset 

  • Design experience is considered an asset 

  • A valid driver's license is considered an asset 

  • NL Fall arrest and ariel lift certification is considered an asset
