Presentation House Theatre (PHT) is located on Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Slílwta/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Territories, in the heart of North Vancouver. The company produces and presents professional theatre for children, youth and adults, and provides vital community engagement through performance outreach experiences. PHT’s community is not based in geography but in the local, national, and international creative collaborations, connections, and programs we share with people on the North Shore and beyond. Through our programming, we invite diverse audiences from all walks of life come together to explore, redefine and confirm their sense of communities. We are a creative hub, linking together multi-faceted individuals and groups in shared cultural experiences. A typical season at PHT includes mainstage productions, presentations, touring, a small series of professional music and dance, and the hosting of several local arts groups, plus the work of artists in the PHT Creative Hub. We average 60+ events throughout the year and proudly act as an incubator space for the development of new works. In addition to this, we run a number of outreach programs, working primarily with seniors and youth on various initiatives, including storytelling, improvisation, and creative education in local Black history education, in partnership with a wide range of schools and community groups.

Job Description

PHT is looking for a theatre director/producer to join our team to take on the project of further development of our PHT Creative Hub model. This is a contract position, based on an average of 15 hours a week for 10 months. Hours are flexible and while hybrid work is possible, it is preferred to work on-site as much as possible.

We are looking for a well-rounded theatre professional who is interested in developing our Creative Hub so that it helps performing artists and small companies find ways to create and produce their work and bring it in front of a public, while serving PHT’s mandate. The roles and responsibilities of this position include:

    • Research and develop an operating plan for the Creative Hub’s ongoing sustainability within PHT, including financial, artistic, marketing, and operational needs, and how they integrate with the company, that will be presented at the end of the contract with updates throughout.

    • Curating and implementing the Creative Hub’s artistic vision by developing, directing, producing and presenting artistic programs for the HUB that are consistent with and forward the mandate, vision and values of PHT.

    • Ensuring the continued development of new works through the initiation and visioning of commissions, creative partnerships, residence programs, for the Creative Hub.
    
    • Taking a lead role in Arts Advocacy to build community awareness of the Creative Hub and PHT as a Creative Cultural Centre, and the role they play in society and to ensure public support for the arts on the North Shore.

    • In partnership with the Facilities Manager, Managing and implementing HUB activities and programming within the parameters outlined by PHT.

    • Inspiring other stakeholders to support and promote the artistic mandate of the Creative Hub.

    • Oversee and implement the budget for the Creative Hub, including the hiring of artists, production personnel, and other creative positions associated with the HUB.

    • In partnership with the Managing Director, ensure the successful management of the Creative HUB and how it integrates into the operations of the buildings and grounds of PHT.

    • In partnership with the Managing Director, ensure the financial health and viability of the Hub, in relation to the whole organization.

    • Develop and implement Fundraising strategies for the Creative Hub which can include: grant writing, private and public sector partnerships and private sector donations.

    • Work in partnership with our Community engagement/Applied Theatre Director, to build relationships with stakeholders including board, staff, patrons, funders, audience, artists, government, other arts organizations, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS

    • A background in theatre producing, directing, or management.

    • A dedication to decolonization and anti-racism work as a team member and an ability to incorporate these principals into program design.

    • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

    • Ability to carry through big-picture vision into day-to-day execution.

    • Experience with financial management, including budgeting and revenue generation.

Note: hours are flexible and based on the Associate’s schedule and needs of the program. Expectation is an average of 15 hours/week. This role will require evening and weekend availability to work with Hub artist’s schedules. PHT’s office hours are typically 9-5, Monday-Friday. Hybrid work is possible, however, it is desired to work in-person as much as possible.

Please note that this position is partially dependent on funding from the Community Services Recovery Fund. Should funding not be received, the terms of the position may change. This will be arranged collaboratively with the selected candidate.
