Join us for a session on all you need to know about Extraordinary Risk Riders.
When a production involves stage combat, aerial work, pyrotechnics, unusual choreography, or other elevated hazards, an Extraordinary Risk Rider becomes a critical part of the engagement process.
But what exactly is it, who determines what an extraordinary risk is, and how should producers prepare?
This session features Heather Cant (Artistic Director, Persephone Theatre) and Alison Peddie (Labour and Employment Relations Manager) who will offer producers a clear, high-level overview of Extraordinary Risk Riders. We’ll explore the function these riders serve, how risk determinations are made, and the practical steps engagers must take to initiate the process before rehearsals begin.
Designed for producers, general managers, and presenting organizations, this session will help you better understand your responsibilities, support artist safety, and ensure your production is set up for compliance and success from day one.
About the Session Leader
Heather Cant is a multi-faceted theatre artist who works as a director, actor, playwright, dramaturg, and producer. Heather’s work has taken her across Canada, with everything from large scale productions to interactive micro-performance. Heather completed her Master of Fine Arts in directing at the University of Calgary, where she developed “Process-As-Relation,” an anti-imperial paradigm for centering intersectional empathy in creation practices. Heather has formerly been the Associate Artistic Director of Western Canada Theatre and Artistic Producer of Project X Theatre. She lives in Saskatoon with her French Bulldog Whimsy where she has been the Artistic Director of Persephone Theatre since the autumn of 2021.
