Company Overview

The Desautels Faculty of Music (DFoM) offers a Bachelor of Music degree (approximately 130 students), a Bachelor of Jazz Studies (50 students), a Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Performance (4 students), a Master of Music degree (25 students), Master of Arts in Music Research degree (5 students). Students are offered specialized study in solo performance, chamber music, large ensembles, music education, musicology, and music theory, as well as a wide range of music electives. The DFoM has 32 full-time faculty, 30-35 Sessional Instructors, 70 contract employees, approximately 15 graders/markers/teaching assistants and 20 student technicians/librarians, and 7 support staff. The DFoM also has an extensive outreach program which includes the Division of Preparatory Studies, offering quality individual and group instruction to students in Winnipeg and the surrounding area. The DFoM’s operating budget is almost $7 million.

The Desautels Concert Hall is a state-of-the art 407-seat performance venue in the heart of the Fort Garry campus. With its stunning architecture, superior acoustics, optimal sightlines and a configurable stage for a variety of performances, it is the University of Manitoba's showpiece venue. The hall can be configured in three ways to create an optimal acoustic and viewing environment for a variety of performances: 

·         A large stage for orchestral groups

·         A small stage for jazz ensembles, chamber groups and vocal recitals

·         A proscenium stage (with wings) for theatre and dance performances. This layout can also host opera and musical theatre productions with an orchestra pit for 48 musicians

The hall's flexibility is accomplished with an adjustable concert shell system of moveable towers, pivoting panels and ceiling reflectors. The hall features catwalks over the stage to allow for rigging scenery or adding lighting and draperies and a technical booth at the back of hall. The hall’s facilities also include a green room, multiple dressing rooms, and ample storage space. Front-of-house includes a reception area, food and beverage concession, and ticket booth. 

Job Description

Key responsibilities

The Operations Administrator, DCH is responsible for overseeing all technical and operational aspects of the Desautels Concert Hall (DCH), including event coordination, staff supervision, facility management, and equipment maintenance. The Operations Administrator, DCH provides both administrative and technical support to internal and external users and acts as the primary liaison for events and partnerships.

Operations & Facilities

·         Responsible for the overall supervision, operation, and coordination of the day-to-day complex operations of the Desautels Concert Hall.

  • Oversee daily operations and serve as the main point of contact for all internal and external events.
  • Manage event scheduling, logistics, contracts, and technical requirements, ensuring efficient use of the facility and alignment with academic priorities.
  • Develop and maintain the master calendar and support revenue generation through rentals.
  • Coordinate high-profile events and ensure effective communication with staff, students, and external partners.
  • Establish and improve policies, procedures, and operational processes in collaboration with leadership.
  • Monitor facility condition, safety compliance, and maintenance needs; act as primary contact for facility-related issues.
  • Support long-term planning, partnerships, and special projects.

 

 

Equipment & Maintenance

  • Oversee inventory, maintenance, repair, and lifecycle management of all technical equipment and furnishings.
  • Ensure compliance with university policies related to purchasing, asset management, and safety.
  • Manage equipment budgets, vendor relationships, and service agreements.
  • Provide technical guidance, training, and support for staff and users.
  • Maintain documentation, instructional materials, and incident reporting.

 

Staffing & Supervision

  • Schedule, supervise, and evaluate technical staff, front-of-house teams, and student employees.
  • Oversee event staffing, rehearsals, and live production support.
  • Manage timesheets, performance reviews, and day-to-day staff coordination.
  • Support box office operations and front-of-house revenue activities.
