Job Description

Position: Head of Carpentry 
Status: Full-time, seasonal, and typically from August to May 
Reporting: reports to the Production Manager & Technical Director

Reporting jointly to the Production Manager and Technical Director, the Head Carpenter is a key member of our production team. This is a full-time, seasonal position that requires daytime, evening, and weekend availability.

 

Persephone Theatre is looking for an individual who is excited to take on the following responsibilities:

Duties and Responsibilities

-        Responsible for the construction of all scenic elements and staging for Persephone productions

-        Operation and basic maintenance of our counterweight fly system

-        Supervise call-in IATSE carpentry shop and stage crews

-        Provide support for venue rentals, as required

-        Attend production and technical meetings, as required

-        Ensure a safe and clean work environment

-        Abide by the Theatre’s safe workplace guidelines and rules, including the Code of Conduct and Anti-Discrimination policies

-        Assist with facility and venue maintenance, as required

-        Some evening and weekend work may be required

-        Carry out any other tasks requested by the Technical Director and/or Production Manager

Qualifications and Skills

Working understanding of all technical aspects of theatre and live events

-        Strong proficiency in the construction of scenery, sets, and staging, in a professional theatre environment

-        Advanced shop and carpentry skills are required

-        Ability to read and understand shop drawings

-        Working knowledge of Vectorworks an asset

-        Basic welding skills an asset

-        Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills

 Able to work well both independently and collaboratively

-        Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines

-        Valid Class 5 Driver’s License

-        First Aid training is an asset

-        Fall Arrest/Aerial lift training an asset

-        Must be a team player, and should have a love of the theatre and the performing arts

-        Willingness to learn new skills across departments is required

As a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be required to become a member of, and maintain good standing in, IATSE local #300.

Salary and Benefits

The salary is $28.40 per hour, to be paid bi-weekly, as per the collective bargaining agreement between Persephone Theatre and I.A.T.S.E local 300.

Anticipated hours are 40 per week. Weekly hours will fluctuate in response to production demands.

Overtime is governed under the collective agreement and will be calculated as per clause 16.1.5.

Dates

The desired start date for this position is August 4, 2026, for a contract that is anticipated to extend for 40 weeks or until May 8, 2027.
