Job Description

Wardrobe Apprentices

This is a Full-time, Seasonal contract (2 positions)

The Shaw Festival is seeking applications for full-time, seasonal Wardrobe Apprentices.  These positions will report to the Head of Wardrobe and Associate Head of Wardrobe, and is part of the Wardrobe department team. The Apprenticeship will be an introduction to the workings of a large repertory theatre wardrobe department.

Under the supervision of the Head of Wardrobe, Coordinators, Cutter, Tailor and Crafts persons, the Apprenticeship will include learning and working on alterations, building accessories and costumes, dyeing materials, and supporting fittings to support all stage productions. The Apprentice may be given the opportunity to supervise small projects on occasion.

These are seasonal, full-time positions in Niagara-on-the-Lake, with contracts between January and August 2023, with a potential extension into Fall 2023. Weekly commitment is based on a 40-hour work week. It is understood that the weekly workload will vary related to the nature of the job responsibilities and production scheduling details will be discussed with candidates selected for interviews.


·         Assists in the creation and updating of Dresser sheets

·         Assists in sewing tasks as required

·         Assist in both wardrobe and crafts areas as required

·         Provides cutters and design teams with items required for fittings

·         Ensures fitting rooms and storage areas are fully stocked and tidy

·         Works with the Associate Head of Wardrobe to complete notions inventory

·         Tidy and help maintain fabric stock

·         Assists with Costume rentals

·         Assists in racking costumes and the moving of costume racks

Qualifications / Required Skills

·         Post-secondary diploma, equivalent education or experience in costume construction is an asset

·         Sewing experience required

·         Organized with a strong ability to multi-task

·         Strong interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills

·         Self-motivated with proven ability to work independently

·         An ability to lift 40lbs comfortably

·         Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with an emphasis on Excel

Preference will be given to candidates with professional sewing experience.
Must be available to work 40 hours per week plus overtime when required.
