Company Overview

The Citadel Theatre is recognized and respected as a national centre of excellence in production, creative development, and audience engagement. Founded in 1974, our organization is approaching our 60th Anniversary Season, which we will be celebrating in 2025/26.

We are in the heart of amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton, AB), and we are proud to call Treaty 6 territory home. As a regional theatre, it is integral that we ensure that the stories we tell, as well as the composition of our artists, board, staff, students, and audience are reflective of the diverse lived experiences in this dynamic city. It is our responsibility as a regional theatre to uplift, amplify and support local artists and arts organizations.

We host an average audience of 100,000 each season and have an annual operating budget of $13M. We produce or present up to six productions in our Mainstage season, plus an annual production ofA Christmas Carol,a summer production, two to three productions in our Highwire Series, and an additional four presentations in our multidisciplinary House Series (featuring concerts, cabarets, comedy, spoken word, dance, drag, and other forms). Our large cultural facility in Downtown Edmonton’s Arts District includes five venues, rehearsal halls, production shops (set, costumes, props), classrooms, an incredible conservatory garden – The Lee Pavilion – and multiple café/restaurant spaces. The five performance spaces of the Citadel Theatre complex are the Shoctor Theatre (proscenium stage); the Maclab Theatre (thrust stage); the Rice Theatre (a cabaret-style black box theatre); Zeidler Hall (auditorium/cinema), and the Tucker Amphitheatre (open air event stage in our public garden space). We host 250-350 contract workers (artists, crews, creative teams) each season.

The Citadel Theatre wishes to acknowledge that the land on which we gather is Treaty No. 6 territory and a traditional meeting ground and home of the First Nations, including both the treaty signatories – Cree, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stony and Cree-Iroquois – as well as other Indigenous peoples, such as the Blackfoot and Métis, who occupy this land. We extend our appreciation for the opportunity to live, create and perform on this territory.
